Description

Borderlands Wildlife Preserve Bird Survey Training - Partnership of Tucson Audubon Society and Borderlands Restoration Network.

When: Tuesday June 15 2pm-3pm online session, Thursday June 17 7am:  in-person training at Borderlands Wildlife Preserve near Patagonia.

Tucson Audubon Society & Borderlands Restoration Network are joining forces to survey birds in the Borderlands Wildlife Preserve near Patagonia, AZ.  For several years Borderlands Restoration Network has been installing habitat improvements such as over 100 rock dams to increase the health of the creeks. These actions will especially benefit Montezuma Quail and many other species of bird and wildlife.

To track the progress and effectiveness of these measures we are starting bird surveys to monitor both species and quantity of birds utilizing both the creeks with restoration and those that have not been modified.

We need volunteers that can identify the birds of SE Arizona by sight and sound to help us with these surveys. The routes are along creeks and involve walking over uneven terrain with no official trails. Routes will be surveyed approx 5 times a year, though you do not need to do all 5 surveys yourself.  If you are not a year round resident or travel for any reason you can still help survey routes when you are available.

June 15 2pm - online training about our specific bird survey protocol. This session will be recorded for those that miss the online session
June 17 - 7am to approx 10:30 am. In-person training session and practice survey at the  Borderlands Wildlife Preserve near Patagonia. Bring: Binoculars, hat, sturdy footwear, water, snacks. We will provide clipboards, data forms and pens.
